Responsible gambling
Betting is entertainment. Keep it that way.
Every bookmaker we feature on this site is licensed. Every article we publish assumes you are an adult betting within your means. But licensing and good advice do not remove the responsibility every punter has to themselves and their household.
How to keep it healthy
- Set a monthly budget — an amount you can lose without changing your standard of living. Never deposit more than that in a single month.
- Never chase losses — doubling stakes to "win back" a losing night is the single most common way bankrolls get destroyed.
- Take time off — a no-betting week or month will often reset perspective on whether you are still having fun.
- Keep a record — log every bet. If you cannot face the monthly total, that is information worth acting on.
- Never bet money earmarked for rent, food, school fees or bills.
Tools every SA operator provides
Every licensed South African bookmaker — including Hollywoodbets, Betway, Supabets and all the others we cover — offers the following self-protection tools. Use them early; they work.
- Deposit limits: cap what you can put into the account per day, week or month.
- Stake limits: cap the size of a single bet.
- Time-outs: temporary lockouts from the account for 24 hours to 30 days.
- Self-exclusion: a permanent lockout that also stops marketing contact. This is the nuclear option — use it if you need it.
When to ask for help
If any of the following describe you, reach out to the NRGP today.
- Betting with money you know you cannot lose.
- Hiding the extent of your betting from family or a partner.
- Feeling relief only when you place a bet.
- Feeling anxious, low or angry outside of betting.
- Thinking about betting more than you think about other things.

The NRGP is free, confidential, and not a judgement. Counsellors are qualified clinicians and your call is anonymous. They can help you set up a self-exclusion across licensed operators, put you in touch with local support groups, and connect you to long-term professional care if you need it.
If you are outside South Africa, your local jurisdiction will have an equivalent service. Search for it now, save the number, and use it when you need it.
